Mexican Gothic: Intoxicating, Lovecraftian

A brief review of the novel Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which I read in the course of an online book club.

This novel surpassed all expectations. It beautifully weaves the Gothic horror elements into unique yet universal perspectives. In terms of craft, the author deftly blends timeless archetypes and interpersonal intrigue--all the plot twists are totally earned and all the tension pays off. The protagonist is fearless yet flawed--she is a real person on the page and her voice kept me captivated; I read this book in a single day! I was so concerned for Noemi and Catalina, I couldn't look away! Absolutely cinematic pacing and heartbreaking stakes kept me glued to the page. I cannot recommend this novel enough for lovers of suspense, Gothic horror, and even literary fiction--the writing was that elegant.
